Wanderlust book rebecca solnit5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() Both its literal and metaphorical genesis (for the purpose of Solnit’s knowledge and economy of writing) was the eighteenth century English garden that stands for a tamed, controlled, and selected environment. It was largely an elite and idiosyncratic activity. Wanderlust has its first source in Solnit’s recognition that walking as a chosen activity, only recently stepped into the world. And it devotes a considerable number of pages to the condition of walking in the contemporary United States and Solnit’s favorite American cities, San Francisco and New York, whose walking centers have survived. It treats select intellectuals’ encounters with Paris. It reflects on walking in England and English literature (a well-studied subject). This book has for its center a handful of modem thinkers ranging from Rousseau and Longfellow, Baudelaire to Kierkegaard, and Walter Benjamin. ![]() Rather, title notwithstanding, it is essentially a perceptive cultural commentary about what writers, thinkers, protesters, and Solnit herself have made of their walking in the last two centuries. This work is not quite a history of walking nor is it a study of Wanderlust. ![]()

Red scare by liam francis walsh5/21/2023 ![]() As I paged through a book so thoroughly enmeshed in history and science fiction by turns, I marveled that something this accomplished is just so casually available to kids these days. I was probably thinking about all of this as I read Red Scare by Liam Francis Walsh, in large part because he’s set the book right smack dab in 1953 ( Seduction of the Innocent was published in 1954). Now more high quality comics for kids are being published than ever before, but even at their peak they still can hardly touch kids’ insatiable demand. It took decades upon decades for graphic novels to pull themselves up out of the morass of ill-favored commentary and start winning major awards. ![]() To what extent has the age of disparaging comics passed? In the old days, books like The Seduction of the Innocent by Frederic Wertham argued that comics were a morally repugnant form of entertainment. ![]()

The love quotient5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Some have risen to the occasion, while others have not been up to the challenge, ill-equipped for the new empathic leadership requirements. Additionally, the pandemic has demonstrated the necessity of organizational leaders who can better connect with their people and show genuine empathy and meaningful support during incredibly trying times.Īdditionally, as we find ourselves in the middle of the "Great Resignation," where employees have lots of options in an incredibly tight labor market, employees aren’t quick to forget how their organization and their boss treated them over the past two years. As a firm believer in servant leadership, with genuine caring for others at its core, LQ seems to fit perfectly with this approach. Personally, this idea of LQ deeply resonates with me. It is humanity’s tool for understanding our own capacity to love and highlights the necessity for us to do so.” LQ is redefining and expanding what love means. On his website, Wise explains, “Love quotient is all about improving our ability to love ourselves and others. Among the many topics discussed, Wise introduced me to the idea of LQ. Recently, I was interviewing Chris Wise, an organizational leadership thought leader, for my podcast. ![]()

The velvet promise by jude deveraux5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() I just downloaded the next book in the series so I can start it, and I have 2 books in my library that I was going to read before I continued the series. This is a book that I wanted to listen to all in one sitting. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? Gabra Zackman's performance was one of the best. I have listened to many wonderful audiobooks. What does Gabra Zackman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book? ![]() I did not feel like the next books were being "set up". A reader is allowed a glimps of them that does not interfere with the main story. The brothers were introduced well in this book. ![]() I honestly think that a narrator can ruin a great story. I was excited to see it come into Audible's library. The audio edition of Velvet Promise is better than the print version. Would you consider the audio edition of Velvet Promise to be better than the print version? ![]()
